  • Installation Location - An edit window provides a default location of C:\MasterSpec. OR, you can choose to install MasterSpec in a different location.
  • Word Processor Support - Select one of five options for word processor support in Microsoft® Word or Corel® WordPerfect®.

How do I install MasterSpec updates?
1.When updating MasterSpec, you can either delete and reinstall the entire MasterSpec library to your computer or just install the update. NOTE: We recommend that, when updating, you delete your old MasterSpec sections that have not been edited for in-house use.
2. To install the current MasterSpec update, open the MasterSpec Installer, and select "Install Current Update" from the Installation Options. Select the appropriate format options, installation location, and word processor support.
3. You can create a folder on your system for use in handling MasterSpec updates by selecting the Install Update Folder option in the Preferences Window. (Click the [Preferences] button at the bottom left-hand corner of the installer screen.) At this point, you will again be prompted to "Install Supporting Documents now" (if you haven't done so already).
4. Because we update Masterworks on a continuous basis, it may be beneficial to reinstall Masterworks at this point as well.

Why does my Word document open in WordPerfect?

If you have more than one word processor on your computer, one will be set as the default. Instead of opening a document from Windows Explorer or My Computer, open the document from inside your word processor.

How do I open PC-created files on Macintosh OS X?

Double-clicking on a doc or wpd file created on a PC will not open the file on a Mac. Here are some ways to correct this:

1. Use the PC Exchange control panel to map the .doc or .wpd file extension to Microsoft Word. Now you can double-click the file to open it.
2. Open the file from inside Word or WordPerfect by selecting File, then Open, then All Files. The file can be opened and saved on a Mac, and should then open normally when double-clicked.
3. Use a utility such as Drop-Info or ResEdit to edit the file's Type and Creator. For example:
  • For Word documents, the Type should be "DOC (space)," and the Creator should be "Winword."
  • For WordPerfect documents, the Type should be "WPD," and the Creator should be "WPWin."
In the above example, (space) represents the space bar character.

What should I do if the MasterSpec installer hangs on "Configuring?"

This problem occurs when there is no installation of the Java Runtime Environment on your computer. You would need to quit the MasterSpec installer, install the Java Runtime Version 6 Update 5, and rerun the Installer. This is the current Java Runtime and is freely downloadable from the following locations:

What do I do if the message "Preparing to Install" appears, followed by "Reach 100%," and then nothing happens?

What do I do if the MasterSpec installer fails before the message "Preparing to Install" reaches 100 percent?

As a self-extracting archive, the first action of the MasterSpec installer is to extract or unpack itself to a temporary location using a built-in file decompression utility. If this extraction fails, the Installer may display an error or simply exit. The following possible causes and solutions have been identified for this group of errors:

1. You may not have authority to install software on your system.
SOLUTION: You need to be logged in as a user with administrator privileges or have a system administrator install the software.
2. The installation program is corrupt.
SOLUTION: Delete the installer and restart the installation process.
3. There might be an incompatibility problem with the computer.
SOLUTION: If another system is available, try running the installer on a different computer. This can help identify the source of the problem.
4. File compression utility packages may be interfering with the unpacking. WinZip 8 and ZipMagic have been reported as affecting the installation on Windows 9.x.
SOLUTION: You may need to disable file compression utilities to allow installation to run or possibly upgrade WinZip 8.
5. Virus scanning software may be interfering with the unpacking. Norton Anti-Virus 2001 has been reported as affecting the installation.
SOLUTION: Turn off virus scanning software and run the Installer again.
